Speech and Theatre Rebecca Fischer, Chair, Boutwell Dramatic Arts 205, 898-2640 The Department of Speech and Theatre offers majors in Speech and Theatre with concentrations in Communication Studies, Theatre, Communication Disorders, and Organizational Communication. Both the Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science are offered in most of these majors. Communication Disorders offers either a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science degree. This degree prepares students for graduate study in speech-language pathology or audiology, which is necessary for careers in schools, hospitals, rehabilitation centers, home health agencies, and private practices. Our curriculum meets the academic standards established by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). Students majoring in Communication Disorders serve as clinicians in the MTSU Speech-Language and Hearing Clinic. The Clinic provides diagnostic evaluations and therapy. Communication Studies also offers both a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science degree. Career fields in communication studies include medicine, industrial relations, business fields, teaching, advertising, tourism, government, etc. Organizational Communication offers a Bachelor of Science degree. Organizational Communication majors find careers in employee communication, special events coordination, fundraising, volunteer training and coordination, organizational publications, promotions and media relations, crisis and image communication, community programs coordination, and consulting, as well as many other areas. Students take courses in business, sociology, psychology, speech and other areas. This major requires a one-semester internship. Theatre offers both a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degrees. Career opportunities in this fields are: theatre, television, film, actor, director, costume designer, lighting designer, technical director, wardrobe manager, set designer, scenic artist, as well as many other areas in theatre. Our MTSU Theatre Department provides “hands-on” experiences with the MTSU theatre productions. All Theatre majors must complete a senior project before graduation. Theatre Teacher Licensure offers a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts degree in Theatre Licensure. Students must apply for admission to the Teacher Licensure Program and have a 2.5 GPA.
