English Department William Connelly, Chair, Peck Hall 302, 898-5644 The English Department offers a Bachelor of Arts degree in both English and Secondary English Teacher Licensure. English prepares students for careers in technical and creative writing, publishing, editing, advertising, marketing, public relations, business administration, television and radio production, filmmaking, computer systems design, Web site and graphic design, consulting, research, and politics. English majors must complete freshman and sophomore General Education requirements for English before taking upper-division English courses. All English majors must take Secondary English Teacher Licensure prepares students to earn a professional license to teach English grades 7-12. Students need to complete the requirements for the degree in English and complete ENGL 3800 (Literature for Adolescents), ENGL 4500 (Methods of Teaching Secondary English) and ENGL 4510 (Modern English Grammar and Usage). Please see the Undergraduate Catalog (2004), Page 233 for additional requirements. Secondary English Teacher majors must be admitted to the Teacher Education Licensure program and have earned a 2.5 GPA or higher. All English majors must complete 12 credit hours of the same foreign language for both English and Secondary English Teacher Licensure programs. Minors in English are available to all students as well as the Interdisciplinary Minors listed on Page 76 of the 2004 Undergraduate Catalog.
