Foreign Languages and Literatures Deborah Mistron, Chair, Boutwell Dramatic Arts 301, 898-2981 The Foreign Languages and Literatures Department offers both the Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degrees in French, German, and Spanish as well as Teacher Licensure for these languages. French, German, and Spanish degrees in Foreign Languages prepare students for international careers in our global society. Students can also seek employment in international business, teaching, communications, exports, tourism, translation and education. Students majoring in French, German, or Spanish must complete 35 credit hours in one language (excluding FL 1010) and must earn 20 hours of upper-division hours. Foreign Language Teacher Licensure prepares students to teach a foreign language in secondary schools, Grades 7-12. Students must complete requirements for the major language they intend to teach, FL 4500 (Introduction to Teaching Foreign Languages), a minor, and the Secondary Education minor (and be admitted to the Teacher Licensure program). The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures also teaches four semesters or more of: Italian, Japanese, Latin, Portuguese, and Russian. Foreign Language Placement Tests are administered at the beginning of each semester. This allows the student to earn as much as twelve hours credit for language skills acquired in high school, during foreign residence, or at home. The test tells which level the student should enroll. The placement test is free and takes about twenty minutes on the computer. To earn the placement credits, a student takes the next course in sequence and passes it with a C or higher. The student must not have earned prior college credit in that language.
