Geosciences Ronald Zawislak, Chair, Kirksey Old Main 325B, 898-2726 The Department of Geosciences offers Bachelor of Science degrees in Geosciences with concentrations in Geography or Geology. The two concentrations are subdivided into six career patterns: Geography for Teachers, Geography, and Geographic Techniques within the Geography concentration. The Geology concentration career patterns are: Geology, Earth Science, and Earth Science for Teachers. All departmental career patterns require two minors. Career opportunities for students who major in the Geosciences are: economic geography, foreign area specialty, spatial technology (remote sensing), geologists and park service, teachers, study abroad, and global studies. GeographyCareer Pattern: Geography for Teachers. This program offers preparation for the student to meet professional requirements for teaching geography in the public schools. Students must be admitted to the Teacher Licensure program with a 2.5 GPA. Career Pattern: Geography. This program is designed for students who wish to become professional geographers. Career Pattern: Geographic Techniques. This program provides basic skills in the methods used to acquire, analyze, and present spatial information (remote sensing) about the Earth’s surface. Government and industry use these techniques in natural resource and environmental management, urban and regional planning, utility management, and transportation planning. GeologyCareer Pattern: Geology. Is designed for students who wish to become certified professional geologists as well as to prepare students for graduate studies. This program includes courses in mathematics, chemistry, biology, and physics. Summer field geology camp is also required. Career Pattern: Earth Science. The Earth Science program has two curricula. Technical curriculum is designed for those wanting a general background in earth science and students wanting to be geologic technicians. Students in this area must have one minor in Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Mathematics, or Computer Science. Career Pattern: Earth Science for Teachers. The Earth Science curriculum is designed for students who plan to teach earth science in the secondary school system. Students must be admitted to the Teacher Licensure program with a 2.5 GPA.
