MTSU's College of Mass Communication is unique in many ways. MTSU Mass Comm is the only college in the United States with both a recording industry program and extensive offerings in mass communication together. The make-up of the college lends itself to some unique opportunities -- like the B.S. in Mass Communication with an emphasis in public relations for the recording industry or the B.S. in Recording Industry with concentrations in Production and Technology or Music Business. There are also minors in areas as diverse as film studies or physics.

The College of Mass Communication includes a “Candidacy Program” for all majors in the College of Mass Communication. This program is based on research indicating a relationship between completion of certain required classes with certain minimum grade point expectations and both performance and retention in the major. In addition, the requirements specified in the candidacy program are consistent with requirements of our national accrediting agency. (Please note that students are not permitted to double-major in areas of concentration within Mass Communication.) The candidacy program of the College of Mass Communication imposes requirements in several areas:

Admission to most upper division professional courses in the College of Mass Communication will be restricted to students admitted to candidacy.

All majors in the College of Mass Communication should apply for admission to candidacy at the end of the semester in which they will have completed 45 semester hours of coursework.

Students in all concentrations in the College must have completed the JOUR/EMC/RIM 1020 “Understanding Mass Media” course with a grade of “C” (2.0) or better before applying for candidacy.

Specific candidacy requirements are listed by concentration in each department.

In addition to the candidacy requirement, all students in the College of Mass Communication are expected to complete a computer literacy requirement. This requirement can be met by taking the following courses: CSCI 1150 ‘Computer Orientation’, INFS 2200 ‘Introduction to Microcomputers’ or INFS 3100 ‘Principles of Management Information Systems’.

When advising students, please remind them to file an upper division form when approximately 60 hours of coursework has been completed and an Intent to Graduate Form during the first semester of the senior year. These forms are available from the academic advisors and the department secretaries.
