Electronic Media Communication

The department of Electronic Media Communication consists of six concentration areas. A description and candidacy requirements for each concentration is outlined below. In addition to fulfilling the requirements to complete the desired major, students are required to choose and complete one (1) Liberal Arts minor; a second minor is optional. A minimum of 120 hours must be earned in order to complete a B.S. degree in Mass Communication. Students must earn a grade of C or better in each course taken in Mass Communication to graduate. Please note that of the total 120 hours to complete the degree, 80 hours must be outside the College of Mass Communication and 65 of these must be Liberal Arts and Sciences hours.

Electronic Media Journalism

This specialty within the Electronic Media Communication concentration, offers preparation for work in the electronic news field, reporting, scriptwriting, and news management. Students will be writing, producing, shooting and editing news stories.

Electronic Media Management

The Electronic Media Management area of the Electronic Media Communication concentration offers preparation for work in the “behind the scenes” areas of broadcast stations and cable systems from programming to advertising and sales. It combines the business and creative aspects of electronic media.

Electronic Media Production

This specialty within the Electronic Media Communication concentration blends theoretical and hands-on approaches to electronic media production. Students become involved in all aspects of production including preproduction planning, proposal writing, scripting, production technology, and editing.

Photography

The Photography concentration integrates technical competence and visual awareness. Experiences promote personal and professional growth toward careers in photography and media photography.

Digital Animation

This specialty within the Electronic Media Communication concentration offers preparation for work in the television and video graphics professions. This area also includes photo digital imaging, which is important to both the still photographer and the video animator.

Digital Media Communication

This concentration provides students with global awareness of digital media communication from societal, political, and economic perspectives. It allows experiences in media design, content creation, DVD and CD-ROM authoring, webmastering, and informational technology management.

Candidacy

The candidacy requirements for all EMC concentrations are the following:

  • Must have 45 hours earned before applying for candidacy
  • Must have an overall GPA of 2.5 or higher
  • With a grade of ‘C’ (2.0) or better:
    • ENGL 1010 – Expository Writing
    • ENGL 1020 – Research and Argumentative Writing
    • MATH (any College level MATH course from General Education listing)
    • EMC/JOUR/RIM 1020 – Understanding Mass Media
    • JOUR 2710EMC 2220, 3020, or 3060 – Writing Course
      • Required only if student earns B- or lower in either ENGL 1010 or ENGL 1020
