Journalism The department of Journalism consists of four concentration areas. A description and candidacy requirements for each concentration is outlined below. In addition to fulfilling the requirements to complete the desired major, students are required to choose and complete two (2) minors—one minor must be a Liberal Arts and Sciences minor; the second minor choice is determined by the student. (NOTE: Public Relations majors must choose a minor from the College of Business as their second minor.) A minimum of 120 hours must be earned in order to complete a B.S. degree in Mass Communication. Students must earn a grade of C or better in each course taken in Mass Communication to graduate. Please note that of the total 120 hours to complete the degree, 80 hours must be outside the College of Mass Communication and 65 of these must be Liberal Arts and Sciences hours. Advertising The advertising program offers students preparation for careers in the creative or business sides of advertising goods and services and examines the role of advertising in society. Students prepare for careers in the creation, production, and sale of advertising. Public Relations The public relations sequence offers students a central focus in learning to mediate communication between an organization and the public. Students study public relations principles as they learn writing, planning, and design skills. Possible careers include jobs in a wide range of public relations agencies, corporations, and nonprofit organizations. Newspaper/Magazine Journalism The concentration in Journalism offers preparation for students who wish to be news reporters, copy editors, feature writers, editorial writers, and freelance magazine writers. Upon reaching the sophomore year, students choose to specialize in either news-editorial, if they are primarily interested in newspaper journalism, or in magazine, if they are primarily interested in magazine journalism.
