| Module 1: College Advising
Recording Industry The Department of Recording Industry offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Recording Industry (Note: this is separate from the Mass Communication major/degree offered by the School of Journalism and the Department of Electronic Media Communication). Although some overlap is possible, students pursuing this major must choose either the production and technology concentration or the music business concentration. Students in both concentrations take a common core of courses including: Understanding Mass Media, History of the Recording Industry, Audio for Media, Survey of the Recording Industry, Copyright Law, and Legal Problems in the Recording Industry. Music Business This concentration prepares students for careers on the business side of the recording industry. It offers a variety of courses each of them dealing with a specialty area in the music business. Sub-core courses required of music business students include Music Publishing, Artist Management, Concert Promotion & Touring, and Marketing of Recordings. An additional fifteen hours of elective in music business courses allows students to explore other areas of the business, including publicity, record retailing, the international recording industry, and music business internships. Music business students select one minor from Business Administration, Entrepreneurship, Marketing, Management, Mass Communication (Journalism or Public Relations), or Mass Communication (Media Management). All music business students must take one accounting course either as part of their minor or in addition to their minor. Production and Technology This concentration prepares students for a wide variety of careers in sound and audio. It allows students to focus their studies in a number of audio engineering and production areas, including electronic music/MIDI, music recording, audio post production, and sound design. Sub-core courses for this concentration include Musicianship for Recording Engineers (or a basic music theory course), Principles and Practices of Electronic Music, Techniques of Recording, and Applied Digital Audio. Students then explore more in-depth multi track recording, MIDI, and other aspects of recording and production through 15 hours of production and technology course electives, including audio internships. Production and technology students may select one minor in any area. Recommended minors are Electronics, Electro-Acoustics, Mass Communication, Computer Science, Film Studies, Entrepreneurship, Entertainment Technology, Entertainment Arts Design, and Music Industry. Please note in the Production Technology concentration, students who have completed Music Theory with a grade of C or better do not have to take RIM 1230 (Musicianship for Engineers), but will have to add three hours of electives to complete the major requirements.
