Probation & Suspension

When is a student put on probation?
If a student fails to attain a 2.00 GPA for the current term and fails to meet the following requirements at the end of a term they will be put on probation for the subsequent term:

Number of Hours Earned
GPA Required
00-29.99 quality hours 1.5 GPA
30-49.99 quality hours 1.8 GPA
50 or more quality hours 2.00 GPA

A student on probation who fails to meet either the 2.00 current GPA or the cumulative GPA based on the above chart during the next semester of enrollment will be suspended. A first suspension requires that the student stay out of school for one semester. Summer terms do not count for this purpose. A second or subsequent suspension results in dismissal from the University for one calendar year.

When is a student suspended?
If a student fails to meet either the 2.00 current GPA or the cumulative GPA based on the above chart at the completion of his/her probationary period they will be suspended from the university. If a student has been previously suspended they are no longer eligible for probationary status.

After 1st suspension

  • Students may appeal their suspension www.mtsu.edu/~records/sforms.htm
  • Students are no longer eligible for probationary status.
  • Students are notified via mail
  • Students must file a re-enrollment form to return to MTSU www.mtsu.edu/~admissn/reenroll.htm

After 2nd suspension

  • Students may appeal their suspension www.mtsu.edu/~records/sforms.htm
  • International students and exchange students will no longer be readmitted
  • Students must file a re-enrollment form to return to MTSU www.mtsu.edu/~admissn/reenroll.htm

Appeal of Academic Suspension

  • Appeal deadlines come quickly after the completion of each semester. If a student is in fear of being suspended they should check their grades soon after their grades have been assigned rather than wait to get their suspension notice in the mail.
  • A student interested in appealing their suspension should fill out the appeal form ASAP!
    www.mtsu.edu/~records/sforms.htm
  • A committee will review all of the appeal letters and consideration for readmission will be given to students who represent ability, maturity, and motivation.
  • If readmission has been granted conditions such as limiting the student’s hours from 8-14 hours for the semester and/or requiring the student to meet with their advisor 1 to 3 times a semester.

A transcript lists a student's current semester GPA including/excluding Academic Enrichment and cumulative GPA including/excluding Acdemic Enrichment. The “U” on the transcript represents the GPA without developmental studies, and the “UJ” represents the GPA including Academic Enrichment. The “UJ” GPA is used to determine a student's probation or suspension. For graduation standards the “U” GPA is used.
