Importance of the Faculty Advisor

Did you have a faculty advisor or mentor whose well-timed words of advice changed your life for the better? For most students few things are more valuable than the feeling of validation and words of advice they get from their faculty advisor. Often the faculty advisor is the first person whom they’ve met in their field of interest. So much is on the line for them when it comes to completing their degrees and getting started on a career that a few words from a supportive faculty advisor are sure to go a long way.

It will come as no surprise that Alice Renarz noted in her chapter on advisor types in the book, Academic Advising (2000, Gordon & Habley, eds), that faculty advisors “are most able to answer discipline-specific questions and have the greatest understanding of course content and curriculum rationale in their own areas.” She offers another reason for their value as advisors: they can discuss the path to a student’s career in academia or the private sector from first-hand experience.
