| Module 1: College Advising Role of Faculty Advisor Summary and Review
Your impact on a student can be immeasurable. By the time the student reaches you, it's likely they're in need of only advising relevant to completing their degree and possibly some mentoring or guidance for potential career development. There are services on campus to assist the student with their concerns that lay outside the boundaries of the academic advising relationship. The advising relationship, including respective roles, should be clearly specified by the faculty advisor. Once the student's general education foundation is solid, the faculty advisor can offer advice for degree completion, specialty areas, and offer the student career information and/or refer them for more specialized career development work. Valuable advising is usually based on tailoring your work to the student's personality and life circumstances. Knowing some important specifics about your student is useful. One of the most important areas to be aware of for the student's financial life is their scholarship status. Documentation has useful functions: it serves as a reminder of the student's circumstances and a prompt for future discussions. It helps hold the student accountable for any advising-related "homework" you gave the student. Documentation can also be useful in case of disputes about session content. |
