FORWARDING EMAIL

How do I move my existing Webmail to MTMail?
If you only want to move a few messages:

  1. You can forward your messages individually using opening the message and clicking on Forward.

If you want to forward a lot of messages, you can connect your old MTSU account to your new MTMail account by following these directions:
  1. After you sign in to your account, click Options, and then click Account.
  2. Under Connected Accounts, click New.
  3. Enter the e-mail address and password of the account you wish to connect. i.e.) zzz1z@mtsu.edu and Pipeline password.
  4. Click Next. The system will connect the accounts. You will receive a confirmation that says " Your accounts are now connected. You'll see mail from your other account soon."; Depending on the number of messages you have, this should not take too long.
  5. You may want to turn off the connected account after you have received your mail, because new mail going to mtsu.edu will automatically be forwarded to your mtmail.mtsu.edu account.
Please note: Connecting any other external e-mail is unsupported by MTSU.

How do I forward my MTMail somewhere else?
All official university communications will be sent to username@mtmail.mtsu.edu. If you've signed-up for MTMail but are no longer using it or want to view your mail in another email service, and are concerned about missing mail sent directly to your MTMail address, you can do the following:

REDIRECT OR FORWARD INCOMING MESSAGES:
The other option is to redirect or forward all incoming messages to an alternate e-mail address of your choice. This is LIKE automatically forwarding the messages, but with some important differences:

  • *Redirected* mail will NOT include other senders! This means that if a message is sent to you, and also To or Cc other recipients, you won't be able to tell that from the redirected message - those other addresses are NOT included in the redirected message. You won't be able to hit "Reply All" and reach everyone initially copied (or even see that others WERE initially copied).
  • *Forwarded* mail will appear as coming FROM your MTMail address! The message subject is appended with "FW: ", and the message is actually sent FROM your MTMail address, TO the forwarding address you've listed. The original sender and other recipients will be visible in the body of the forwarded message.
  • Redirected mail will appear that it was sent directly to the "redirect" address -- you won't see your MTMail account included in the TO or CC lines.
  • Redirected mail will appear that it was sent directly to the "redirect" address -- you won't see your MTMail account included in the TO or CC lines.
  • Copies of the redirected or forwarded mail ALSO remain in MTMail. You can always log in to MTMail to see the full original headers, other recipients, what address it was initially sent to, etc.

If you'd like to turn on automatic redirects:

  1. Access MTMail using a Supported Browser.
  2. Near the top-right of the page, click Options.
  3. Click Organize E-mail from the left-hand menu.
    New Inbox Rule
  4. On the "Inbox Rules" tab, click the New button.
  5. Under "When the message arrives, and:", select [Apply to all messages].
  6. Under "Do the following", choose Redirect the message to... or Forward the message to... - see the pros and cons of each outlined above.
  7. This should automatically open an Address Book window. If it doesn't click the "*Select one" link right next to the "Do the following" pull-down menu.
  8. At the bottom of the window, next to "To->", type the e-mail address where you'd like your mail redirected. Click OK.
  9. Click Save

You have two options for forwarding or redirecting your mail. Redirecting and forwarding are not the same. Redirecting is the recommended method if you choose to read your mail in another e-mail provider.

  • Messages that are redirected will appear to come from the original sender. When you reply to a message that has been redirected, the reply will be sent to the original sender.
  • Messages that are forwarded will appear to be forwarded from you. When you reply to a message that has been forwarded, the reply will be sent to the address the message was forwarded from, not to the original sender.
  • A copy of messages that you redirect or forward will remain in your Inbox.

If I've already forwarded my MTSU e-mail to Gmail or another mail service, do I have to change to MTMail?
Yes. The forward that you have set on MTSU Webmail will be overridden to forward to MTMail. You have the option to redirect your mail from MTMail to another service provider. However, MTMail has some benefits that other services do not: (1) It identifies you as a student of MTSU. This is sometimes important, such as when communicating with course instructors who must be sure you are the person you say you are when discussing your grades or other protected information. (2) The collaboration features on MTMail will facilitate group projects for classes and student organizations, (3) the other features are comparable or better than what other free mail services provide.

What happens to the mail in my current Webmail account?
It will stay in your current system until you forward it elsewhere (to MTMail or another mail service). However, new mail will automatically go to your MTMail account for the designated time. Activating a new account doesn't automatically move your old mail to that account. For instructions on how to move it, see FAQ: How do I forward my existing Webmail to MTMail. Any mail in your MTSU Webmail account that you want to keep must be moved by December 31, 2010, or it will be deleted.

Do I have to keep the same e-mail provider throughout my MTSU career?
No. You can change your forwarding at any time. You can change to any other service provider of your choice. Official university e-mail (registration, grades, fee statements, etc.) will be sent to your @mtmail.mtsu.edu account and forwarded automatically to whichever address you have chosen.
