TECHNICAL HELP

Where do I go for technical help with MTMail?
If you're having problems signing up, or questions regarding email, contact the Help Desk at 615-898-5345 or help@mtsu.edu. If you have questions, or are having problems with services other than email, you can go to the following for help: www.outlookliveanswers.com/forums

What are the recommended browsers?
You can use Outlook Web App and the Web management interface with almost any Web browser. This includes Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari, and most other Web browsers on computers running UNIX, Apple Macintosh, or Windows.

Outlook Web App and the Web management interface
To use the complete set of features available in Outlook Web App and the Web management interface, you can use the following browsers on a computer running Windows XP, Windows 2003, Windows Vista, or Windows 7:

  • Internet Explorer 7 and later versions.
  • Firefox 3.0.1 and later versions.
  • Chrome 3.0.195.27 and later versions.
On a computer running Max OS X, you can use:
  • Safari 3.1 and later versions.
  • Firefox 3.0.1 and later versions.
On a computer running Linux, you can use:
  • Firefox 3.0.1 and later versions.

If you use a Web browser that doesn't support the full feature set, Outlook Web App will open in the light version.

Light Version of Outlook Web App

The light version of Outlook Web App is optimized for accessibility, such as for users who are blind or have low vision. The light version provides fewer features and is faster for some operations. You may want to use the light version if you're on a slow connection or using a computer with unusually strict browser security settings. The light version can be used with almost any browser and has the same features across all browsers.
For information about how to use the light version, see Accessibility for Blind and Low Vision Users.

What else do I need to know?

  • If you need to use S/MIME for digital signatures or message encryption, you must use Internet Explorer on a computer running a 32-bit operating system.
  • Check your Web browser's options to verify the following settings to have the best experience using Outlook Web App:
    • Enable session cookies. Session cookies are deleted at the end of the browser session.
    • Enable JavaScript.
    • Check pop-up blocker settings. Pop-up blocker settings in your Web browser or in an add-on pop-up blocker may prevent Outlook Web App from working as expected.

What are the maximum size/limits of MTMail?

  • Message size including attachments - 25MB
  • Single file attachment - 18MB
  • Number of file attachments - 125
  • Mailbox size - 10 GB
  • Number of recipients (To:, Cc & Bcc) - 100
  • Message rate (sending) - 30 per minute
  • Total recipients per day - 500

What are the requirements for using MTMail on the web?
In order to use the complete set of features, and get the best possible experience from MTMail, you need to use one of the recommended web browsers - Internet Explorer 7 (IE7) for Windows, Mozilla Firefox 3.0.1 or higher for Windows or Mac, or Safari 3.1 or higher for Mac OS X. Please note that even though these browsers are considered supported, there are still a few options which are NOT accessible from browsers other than Internet Explorer 7 or 8 - including accessing the Junk E-mail settings in MTMail. For more information on exactly what features are available in which browser, see also Microsoft's list of Supported Browsers and Operating Systems

How do I access MTMail using POP or IMAP?
The server settings are as follows:

  • POP - outlook.com
  • IMAP - outlook.com
  • SMTP - pod51004.outlook.com

Note: Microsoft requires authenticated and secure transmission. To do this, you will need to set the inbound setting to "SSL" and the outbound for "TLS". In some programs, you will need to set the authentication for outbound (SMTP) to be the same as incoming.

What is the difference between POP and IMAP?
POP - POP (Post Office Protocol), or POP3, uses a mail program ("client") such as Eudora, Thunderbird, Outlook Express, or others, to download all your mail from the server and store it on your local computer. It can be configured to remove the mail from the server at the same time it's downloaded, or to temporarily leave a copy there for later access. Once mail has been downloaded, it can be accessed from your e-mail client at any time, even if your computer is not currently connected to the Internet. Mail saved to your local computer using a mail client and POP does not count against your mail storage limit UNLESS a copy of that message is left on the server. This allows for long-term storage/archiving of sent and received e-mail. As POP stores downloaded mail onto the local computer, it works best for people checking mail from a single computer all the time.

IMAP - IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) uses a mail program like POP, but instead of downloading mail from the server and storing it locally, mail remains stored on the server until you remove it, and can be organized into folders that remain on the server as well. IMAP can track which messages have been read, forwarded, replied-to, deleted, and moved to different folders, so that when checking your mail using IMAP on a different computer, message status and organization remains consistent. IMAP works well when checking your e-mail from multiple yet consistent locations, such as at home, in the office, and using a laptop while traveling. Mail stored on the server (in any folder) using IMAP does count against your mail storage limit. IMAP clients can also have local folders, where you can save mail to your local computer for archival or later access. Like POP, however, these local folders are only accessible from the specific computer on which they are created.

Remote Device Wipe
Remote device wipe is a feature that enables the Microsoft Exchange server to set a mobile device to delete all data the next time that the device connects to the Exchange server. A remote wipe effectively removes all synchronized information and personal settings from a mobile device. This can be useful when a device is lost, stolen, or otherwise compromised. After a remote wipe has occurred, it is very difficult to recover data. However, no data removal process leaves a device as free from residual data as it is when it is new. Recovery of data from a device may still be possible by using sophisticated tools.

Mail I want is going to my junk e-mail folder. What can I do?
You have 3 options to handle legitimate e-mail that you do not want to go into your junk mail folder:

  1. You can disable the junk e-mail filter. By default, junk e-mail filtering is enabled. If you would like to disable this, please be advised that you won't be able to control unwanted and unsolicited messages. It isn't a good security practice to disable junk e-mail filtering.
  2. You can safe-list senders by e-mail address or domain.
For information on how to change your junk e-mail options, go to: http://help.outlook.com/en-us/140/ms.exch.owal.optionslight.junkemail.aspx
  3. You can create a rule on how to handle e-mails from a particular domain or e-mail address. For more information on Inbox Rules, go to: http://help.outlook.com/en-us/140/bb899620.aspx
