Biography

Chip Henderson has been regularly performing in musical settings ranging from traditional Dixieland to chamber orchestras since the mid 1990's. In that time he has performed formally and informally with notable musicians such as Marvin Stamm, Frank Foster, Ernie Watts, Bill Mobley, James Williams, Donald Brown, Mulgrew Miller, Alvin Fielder, George Cartwright, Ron Eschete, Mundell Lowe and Peter Bernstein.

Chip Henderson has been regularly performing in musical settings ranging from traditional Dixieland to chamber orchestras since the mid 1990's. In that time he has performed formally and informally with notable musicians such as Marvin Stamm, Frank Foster, Ernie Watts, Bill Mobley, James Williams, Donald Brown, Mulgrew Miller, Alvin Fielder, George Cartwright, Ron Eschete, Mundell Lowe and Peter Bernstein.

Aside from performing with various small jazz groups and big bands in the Memphis/ Nashville metropolitan areas, he has appeared numerous times with the Jazz Orchestra of the Delta, the IRIS Chamber Orchestra, the Memphis Symphony, the Jackson Symphony (TN), the University of Memphis Faculty Chamber Ensemble, the Murfreesboro Symphony, and the Nashville Symphony. His ability to double on various stringed instruments has allowed Chip to work with the national touring companies of Chicago, Monty Python's Spam-a-Lot, The Lion King, High School Musical, 9 To 5, Shrek: The Musical, The Addams Family, Anything Goes, and Motown: The Musical.

Chip is a graduate of the University of Memphis with a Bachelor of Music (1997) and a Master of Music (2002) in Jazz Guitar Performance. During his time at Memphis he studied privately with former Count Basie guitarist and author Charlton Johnson as well as took part in lessons and master classes with jazz guitar greats Calvin Newborn, Attila Zoller, Peter Leitch, Freddie Bryant, Mark Elf, Mundell Lowe & Bucky Pizzarelli.

Chip currently teaches guitar at Middle Tennessee State University (Murfreesboro, TN) and Tennessee State University (Nashville, TN). Prior to accepting these positions, Chip taught jazz guitar and directed the jazz guitar ensemble at Belmont University (Nashville, TN) from 2011 to 2014 and jazz guitar (class and applied), jazz history, jazz theory and directed the jazz guitar ensemble at the University of Memphis from 2002 to 2011. Along with his teaching duties in the Nashville area, Chip is also a freelance arranger for Hal Leonard's Jazz Guitar Division and has been a regular contributor to Just Jazz Guitar Magazine since 2007.
