Middle Tennessee Jazz Orchestra (MTJO)

Founded in 1998, the Middle Tennessee Jazz Orchestra is a professional big band in residence at Middle Tennessee State University. Comprised of MTSU jazz faculty members, MTSU graduate students and some of the finest professional jazz musicians from throughout the Middle Tennessee region, the MTJO performs music of today's most innovative jazz composers. It is well respected for its precision, hard-swinging, and outstanding soloists.

The MTJO has performed with internationally known jazz artists including Tim Hagans (below), Slide Hampton, David Liebman, Kenny Werner, Dick Oatts, Marvin Stamm, Steve Wiest, Deborah Brown, and Mike Longo. The group also recently performed a concert of Duke Ellington's sacred music. MTJO is committed to performing the guest-artist's compositions, most of which are well known as jazz composers. The group has also appeared at the Watertown Jazz Festival and at area jazz clubs in addition to its regular concert series at MTSU.
