Sigma Theta Tau
Sigma Theta Tau International, Honor Society for Nursing, was founded in 1922 by
six nursing students at Indiana University. The founders chose the name from the initials
of the Greek words Storga, Tharos, and Tima, to mean love, courage and honor. The
organization is the second largest of its kind in the United States and among the
five largest and most prestigious in the world.
The Society exists to:
Recognize superior achievements in nursing
Encourage leadership development
Foster high nursing standards
Strengthen the commitment to the ideals of the profession
Currently , there are 322 chapters and more than 160,000 members. Membership is conferred
only upon nursing students in baccalaureate or graduate programs who demonstrate excellence
in nursing or upon qualified bachelors, masters, and doctoral graduates who demonstrate
exceptional achievement in the nursing profession. Eligibility requires that each
potential member have at least a 3.0 cumulative grade point average on a 4.0 scale
and be in the top third of the graduating class. The local chapter of Sigma Theta
Tau, Xi Alpha, meets one time each semester, and the Board meets on an ad hoc basis.
