Financial Aid Tips - Handbook

  1. Find out who your Financial Aid Counselor is by using the listing in the Financial Aid page , based on your last name.
  2. Call him/her and leave a voice mail with your name, SS#, and phone numbers where you can be reached for the next few days.
  3. When they call you back, set up a face-to-face appointment to go over your financial aid needs and federal contributions.
  4. During summer, register for classes, but before paying for them, make an appointment with your financial aid counselor and find out if there is any SEOG (leftover Federal money) for you for tuition and/or books and supplies.
  5. After you receive any assistance that is available, pay the balance of tuition owed. (They never reimburse monies already paid, but sometimes help when there is leftover money from Pell Grants not used)
  6. Always check to see what Federal monies are available before paying summer tuition and before taking out a loan.
  7. It may be a good idea to get your student loans from more than one source when you get to choose which bank to have your loan go through in a particular year. A source in the loan consolidation business says this way you are not locked into the offer for consolidation terms from just one bank; and we all know that where there is competition for your business is where you will get the consolidation terms.
