Academic Fresh Start

HANDBOOK-INFORMATION FOR STUDENTS
Academic Fresh Start

The Academic Fresh Start program is for transfer or returning students with a low GPA. It is available to any student who has not been enrolled for a period of four years. The student must satisfactorily complete 40 hours of classwork at MTSU and then may petition to have grades from all prior coursework disregarded in calculating the current GPA.

A written request and a transcript must be submitted to the dean of the college in which the student is majoring. If the request is granted, the earlier courses will not count toward requirements for graduation or professional licensure but will appear on the student's transcript with appropriate notation.

This means that you will lose any credits for the prior work that you had earned. It may even require you to repeat general education courses that were wiped out once you completed the Academic Fresh Start. Therefore, you may want to consider taking over individual courses where you had received an F rather than wipe out both your F's and your passing grades for previous college work. If the F is in a course no longer needed for your degree plan, you might even leave it there and offset it with A's in your major interest to improve your GPA without doing Fresh Start.
