Graduation - Handbook

Graduation ceremonies are held following the fall, spring, and summer terms. Murphy Center is the site of this important occasion. Check the graduation Web site at www.mtsu.edu/records/grad.shtml for specific days and times for the ceremonies. Fall and Spring typically have two ceremonies on Saturday and Summer typically has one ceremony on Saturday.

Undergraduates—If you intend to graduate you should submit a Notice of Intention to Graduate Form and Upper-Division Form simultaneously to your coordinators of undergraduate services (graduation analyst) during priority registration when two semesters are remaining until graduation. This allows time to check records and notify students so they will have two semesters to plan remaining courses. Consult the calendar in the current registration guide for the deadline date. The undergraduate form is available in the Records Office, Cope Administration Building 102, and on the Web at www.mtsu.edu/records/docs/intentform.pdf .

All students must complete the general requirements as prescribed by the University and the specific requirements set forth for the degree sought. Currently, a minimum of 120 hours is required (some programs may require more than 120 hours) with at least two semesters in which a minimum of 30 semester hours is earned in residence during the junior and senior year. The last semester must be in residence unless permission is granted by the dean of the college in which the student is pursuing a major.

A student must have a 2.00 GPA overall in degree credit courses and a 2.00 average in the major and in 42 hours of upper-division work to graduate. Some departments require a 2.00 GPA in the minor. No more than 25 percent of the credits for nonbusiness degrees may be in courses commonly found in a school or college of business. No student will be issued a diploma, certificate of credit, or transcript of his/her record until all debts or obligations owed to MTSU have been satisfied.

Graduates—The graduate form is available in the Office of Graduate Studies located on the first floor of the Sam Ingram Building, 2269 Middle Tennessee Boulevard. It's also available on their website at http://www.mtsu.edu/graduate/pdf/intent_graduate2009.pdf .

Applicable Catalog—Students ordinarily are allowed to graduate under the requirements of the MTSU catalog that was current when they entered any college or university under the Tennessee Board of Regents, provided graduation is within eight years of that entrance date. Students may elect to meet the requirements of any one catalog published while they are in attendance at MTSU provided graduation is within eight years of the catalog date.

Any specific question you may have about graduation requirements should be directed to your advisor.
