James E. Walker Library - Handbook

The Walker Library is important to your success as a student, offering a spacious environment for study and reflection. A broad range of information is available to support general inquiry, course assignments, term papers, and research projects.

Librarians at the first floor reference desk assist with research needs, drawing on a variety of resources locally, nationally, and internationally. In addition, various research guides, instruction classes, and individual help sessions orient students to library collections, services, and policies.

Three hundred library computers offer Microsoft Office software as well as access to library collections and the Internet. The library offers laptop computers for use in the building along with 700 network connections and a wireless network. Walker Library is accessible to students with disabilities and several computers are equipped for special needs.

Important things to remember when using the Library: Keep your MTSU ID card with you. It is required for checking out library materials. Report to the library immediately the loss of your ID card since materials checked out on the card are your responsibility. Books can be checked out for four (4) weeks and renewed once (if another user has not requested them). Students are responsible for returning materials on time, and fines are charged for overdue items. Be sensitive to others who may need a quiet environment in which to study. If you want to talk in groups, please use the group study rooms. To keep from disturbing others, cell phones should only be used in the first floor atrium, the cafe, or outside the building. While food and beverages may be purchased in the cafe, they are not allowed in other areas of the library. Library staff are there to help you. Don't be afraid to ask for help.

Normal library hours are as follows:

Sunday, 1:00 p.m. - midnight
Monday-Thursday, 7:30 a.m.- midnight
Friday, 7:30 a.m.- 5 p.m.
Saturday, 8 a.m.- 5 p.m.

Hours vary during holidays and breaks. Changes will be posted at the entrance and on the library's web page at http://library.mtsu.edu/information/hours.php .

Suggestions for improvements in library services can be submitted to the suggestion box on the library's Web page ( http://library.mtsu.edu/information/suggestions.php ) or to personnel in the library administrative office (Library #472; 898-2772). Also, forms are available at every public desk that allow students to tell the library what it is doing right and what needs improvement. A special award program is in place for students who work in the library.

Recognition is now available for all MTSU students through the Walker Library Book Honor Program. This is a way for parents and others to recognize your achievement as a student and help the library too. For details, check the Web at http://library.mtsu.edu/administration/book_honor.php .
