Career planning grows out of your larger life goals and desires. As such, it is an ongoing process which may be discerned in a number of ways: personal counseling; academic counseling as you choose a field of study; and through concrete and systematic exploration and testing to match your skills, values, and abilities with the skills, values, and abilities of individuals already active in various occupations. Ideally, the process of career planning begins early and evolves throughout the college years as you develop more specialized interests and skills, apply for internships, and consider cooperative education programs.
Many sources for help are available at MTSU. The career library, located in the Career Development Center, is available to students researching career fields and developing an effective job search. The library contains both printed materials and video tapes on writing resumes, learning interview skills, and on careers from accounting to zoology—as well as information on many prospective employers.
Personal assistance is available to students making career decisions in the Academic Support Center. The center can help you choose a major and design a career development plan. The center offers and interprets several different personality and interest inventories that focus on career planning.
