The Military Science Department (Blue Raider Battalion) is an integral part of the MTSU College of Basic and Applied Sciences. It provides the nation's premier leadership training course, offering some of the most adventurous and challenging classes at the University. Upon completion of your studies for an undergraduate/graduate degree and pre-commissioning training, you will receive a commission as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army. Additionally, the Blue Raider Battalion serves as a primary source of college funding for many MTSU scholars, athletes, and leaders. This funding is made available through 4-, 3-, and 2-year scholarships that pay full tuition, a generous book allowance, and a $300 to $500 per month living allowance.
The program's primary emphasis relates to developing leadership and management skills through classroom instruction and practical, hands-on application. The first two years of the ROTC program are open to all enrolled students who desire to learn about the Army and obtain leadership and management training without incurring a military obligation.
Students who transfer from a junior college or who did not take freshman and sophomore ROTC classes may attend a Leadership Training Course for four weeks during the summer. Students receive a salary while attending this training. Others who desire to continue with the advanced courses as juniors (M S 3110 and M S 3120) make an official commitment and have the option of selecting active, reserve, or national guard duty as an officer in the United States Army.
Once enrolled in the advanced courses, cadets attend physical training three times a week, classroom, and lab instruction twice a week. During this training, infantry tactics are used as the basis to develop all leadership and management skills. Upon completion of M S 3110 and M S 3120 cadets attend five weeks of summer training (Leadership Development and Assessment Course) at Fort Lewis, Wash. Senior cadet responsibilities include planning, coordinating, supervising, and instructing all lab and physical training activities for the underclassmen/women.
The ROTC program, while mentally and physically demanding, provides a unique opportunity to acquire leadership and management skills required of military and civilian professionals. Also, friends that you will meet in the Blue Raider Battalion are some of the finest students at MTSU.
