Justin Nelson
Memphis, TN

Hi, I am Justin Nelson from Memphis, Tennessee and I'm one of Tennessee's Best!

In 2006 I participated in the Music Program for Tennessee Governor's school for the Arts. The professors were incredibly knowledgeable in their fields and the music facilities were more than I could have hoped for. I knew from that experience that MTSU was the right place for me to study Vocal/General secondary Music Education.

The MTSU School of Music is a competitive program, with 34 full time and 34 part-time faculty. The school presents more than 180 concerts each year, including fully-staged operas, wind band, orchestral, choral, jazz, faculty & student solos, and chamber music performances.

My freshman year I wanted to live in one of the first year experience resident halls. I was assigned to Corlew Hall, which houses the newly-renovated campus dining hall, McCallie. Today I am a Resident Assistant for the Monahan living/learning community. The experience is incredibly rewarding. I assist students in music, nursing, and pre-professional majors and I plan programs and events based upon their interests, areas of study, and what is going on around campus and in the community.

In addition to being an RA, I am involved in a variety of other campus and community activities including, MPAC, ACDA, Arts Enterprise, Student Ambassadors, and Blue Elite. I enjoying staying busy with my activities but school is my priority. I take about 19 hours per semester and I continue planning ahead for the future. I hope to one day own a performing arts company and teach high school or college level music. MTSU offers a variety of job fairs and workshops to help prepare and educate students by teaching time management skills, goal setting, and future planning.

The longer I stay at MTSU, the more I come to appreciate it. I have met all sorts of people from a variety of ethnic, religious, and social backgrounds. I am grateful for learning and living in this diverse atmosphere because it has allowed for a great deal of personal exploration and growth. In great thanks to the wonderful professors, faculty, staff, and students, I guarantee you will learn more than you could have ever thought possible within the MTSU community. Come and be one of Tennessee's best! You'll be really glad you did!
