Academic
Advisors In addition to the academic
assistance provided by the faculty, MTSU has academic college
advisors in each undergraduate college: Basic and Applied
Sciences; Business; Education; Liberal Arts; and Mass
Communication.
Academic college advisors assist students in their academic
growth and adjustment to university life. The advisors work
primarily with freshmen, transfers, and potential majors within
a specific college, as well as with students in academic
difficulty.
Advisors counsel students regarding correct college courses,
make referrals to faculty major advisors, assist students
during CUSTOMS orientation and registration activities, and
make referrals to the Academic Support Center.
Any student seeking academic assistance is encouraged to
contact an academic college advisor. Also, the academic
advisors for undeclared freshmen assist students in selecting a
major.

the following requirements:
-
minimum 3.0 high school GPA
-
a minimum composite ACT score of 22, or
-
a combination of a minimum 2.7 GPA and a minimum composite

of these applicants.
Adult Services
Center The Adult Student Services Center
provides information for prospective students, particularly
adults returning to college after a period of time away from
school. The center provides information and referrals to
students about all aspects of academic and social life at MTSU.
It provides seminars, support groups, and classes to help adult
learners manage stress, balance school with their families and
careers, brush up on their study techniques, and experience
greater satisfaction with the educational experience on campus,
thus facilitating the completion of their degrees.
The center also sponsors a student organization for adult and
reentry students called OWLS (Older Wiser Learners) which
functions as a support system and a social and service
organization, helping students by forming a peer adult learner
mentor program and continuing their advocacy for services
throughout the University to better serve the needs of adult
learners. The honorary organization for adult learners,
Pinnacle, is also sponsored through the Adult Services
Center.

provides a comprehensive recreation program for the students,
faculty, and staff of the University. The activities range from
competitive team sports to informal free play, from fitness to
outdoor recreation.
The 141,000 sq. ft. Recreation Center has six
basketball/volleyball courts; six racquetball courts; a
three-lane indoor track; a 4,000 sq. ft. aerobic room; over
8,000 sq. ft. of free weights; selectorized machines and
cardiovascular machines; an indoor swimming pool, 33 meters x
25 yards, with water slide and diving board; equipment
checkout; two men's and women's locker rooms; lounge areas; a
massage therapy room; indoor soccer arena; a rock-climbing
wall; a challenge course; a 4-ft. deep outdoor swimming pool
and sun deck with four adjacent sand volleyball
courts.
An expansion to the facility is in the planning and bidding
process, and this will add additional workout areas. New
intramural fields, which include football and soccer fields as
well as a walking trail, are currently being constructed on
East Main Street.
The Recreation Center serves MTSU students and other authorized
members of the University community (faculty, staff, spouses,
dependents, and invited guests). A validated ID card must be
presented at the main entrance to enter the Recreation Center
during operating hours.
An equipment check-out service, located at the front desk of
the Recreation Center, makes available a variety of equipment
for students to use. Students may check out equipment by
presenting a valid student ID card. There is a small rental fee
for outdoor recreation equipment.
Hours of Operation Fall and spring
semester hours for the Center: Monday through Thursday,
6 a.m.-11 p.m. Friday, 6 a.m.-10 p.m. Saturday, 9
a.m.-8 p.m. Sunday, 12 noon-11 p.m.
Career and Employment
Center The Career and Employment Center
assists students in their search for part-time employment and
career opportunities following graduation. The center provides
a Career Resource Library, campus interviews with prospective
employers, and job listings. Special events include a
comprehensive Career Day, Nurses/Health Career Day, and a
Summer Jobs/Internships Fair.
Counseling
Services The mission of Counseling
Services is to provide personal support counseling for
currently enrolled students.
Personal support counseling provides a safe
place and support for students who are having difficulties
because of personal problems, external pressures, or a crisis
such as depression, addictions, or grief. Supportive counseling
moves students towards healthy academic functioning. It may
simply be a "listening ear" or include professional assessment
and referrals for community support, medical needs, or
long-term therapy.
Counseling Services seeks to work with the faculty and students
to plan and achieve with integrity both the educational goals
of the institution and the personal goals of the individual
student. Students desiring counseling services are urged to
contact Counseling Services, located in Keathley University
Center, Room 329.
Dining
Services Through MT Dining Services, the
University is able to offer different dining facilities
throughout campus. These facilities offer a wide variety of
menu options at the lowest possible cost to the
students.
The dining facilities available on campus are the RFOC at
McCallie Dining Hall, the Terrace Restaurant at the JUB, the
KUC Grill, the Cyber Cafe @ Woodmore, Starbucks at the James E.
Walker Library and Grab & Go carts located throughout the
campus.
These dining facilities offer a wide variety of selection from
"all you care to eat" to healthy lifestyle menu. Well known
food chains such as Subway, Quiznos, Burger King, Pizza Hut,
Starbucks, Freshens, and Chick-Fil-A are also located in the
campus dining facilities.
There are many meal plan options that suit a variety of needs.
However, all first year residents in University Housing are
automatically billed for the First-Year Flex
Plan which gives the student 10 meals per week usable
at the RFOC or the Terrace Restaurant, and $350 of Flex Dollars
that can be used in any dining service location including the
convenience store located in McCallie Dining Hall and the Cyber
Cafe @ Woodmore. First-year residents residing in the Scarlet
Commons Apartment complex will automatically be billed for the
4-Meal Flex Plan with $250 Flex Dollars to be
used under the same guidelines as above. Unlimited Meal
Plans are also offered, which feature an unlimited
amount of meals to be used at anytime during the week, plus
$125 flex dollars. The First-Year Flex Plan can be upgraded to
an Unlimited Meal for no additional charge during the first two
weeks of each semester.
Disabled Student
Services
Students with disabilities are encouraged to contact Mr. John
Harris, Director of Disabled Student Services. His office
provides a number of services for students with physical,
sensory (including auditory and visual), speech, psychological,
and other disabilities not listed above. Students with learning
disabilities should contact John Harris as well. These services
can include early registration. Disabled Student Services is
located on the first floor of the Keathley University Center in
Room 120 and Room 122.
Escort
Service Public Safety will provide a
walking escort for students on campus between the hours of 6
p.m. and 12 midnight each day. In order to take advantage of
this service, a student calls the Public Safety Office at 2424
and gives the dispatcher his/her location. Students should call
Public Safety any time they need assistance.
Financial
Aid The purpose of Student Financial Aid
is to provide assistance to qualified students who would find
it difficult or impossible to attend MTSU without aid. To apply
for financial assistance, the Free Application for Federal
Student Aid (FAFSA) must be completed each year. The FAFSA
determines students' eligibility for federal financial aid.
MTSU also has a limited number of scholarships that are based
on academic performance and/or ability.
Grades
Students can access PipelineMT/WebMT to find
out their grades at the end of each term. If a student needs a
hard copy of the grades, a report may be mailed upon request to
the address that the student lists as being the permanent
address. Grade reports will not be mailed if the student has
any type of hold at the University. Semester grades are
officially recorded as part of the student's permanent academic
transcript. Please see Pipeline section for additional
information.
Greek Life at Middle Tennessee State University adds a
dimension to college life that is not found in other
organizations. Each personjoining one of the 16 fraternities or
12 sororities derives something unique from the Greek system.
For some, it serves as a support network and a place to develop
friendships. For others, it offers the chance to become
involved with community service projects, offers leadership
opportunities, and promotes scholastic achievements. For most,
it is all these things, plus a lifelong bond of sisterhood or
brotherhood. Greek life provides friendships and memories that
last a lifetime and lead to a well-rounded college
experience.
Health
Insurance
It is highly recommended that if you do not have private
insurance, you purchase a plan that will give you healthcare
and hospitalizations benefits in addition to the Student Health
Center services.
The Tennessee Board of Regents has selected an affordable
student health insurance plan to offer to you. All registered
students taking 1 or more creidt hours are eligible to
participate in this insurance program.
If you do have private insurance, be sure to check

the State of Tennessee requires students entering colleges,
universities, and technical institutes with enrollment of
greater than 200 students to provide proof of two (2) doses of
measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine on or after the first
birthday, or proof of immunity to measles if date of birth is
1957 or after.
You will not be allowed to register for classes until an
acceptable form is on file in the Student Health Services
Office.
The McFarland Health Services Center is located across from
Cummings residence hall. Hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday
through Friday. Students must be enrolled at the time they seek
the services and must present a photo ID. Such students are
eligible for consultation service for individual problems and
for treatment of minor illnesses and injuries. Notes for class
absences are not given by the health services staff. Each
student is encouraged to know each professor’s
expectation for class attendance and respond
accordingly.
Emergencies and other medical needs that may arise during times
when the Health Services Center is not open should be directed
to the appropriate community facility. A modern emergency room
is available 24 hours a day only a short distance from the
campus. Consult the Yellow Pages for walk-in clinics available
during the early evening hours and on weekends. Students should
call to verify specific office hours.
Health Services offers pre-employment physicals, FAA physicals,

University Writing Center
The University Writing Center is a free tutoring service funded
by the university for all MTSU students. We help students in
any course feel more comfortable approaching any writing
project by determining strengths and by building on weaknesses.
We are not a proofreading or editing service; we are here to
teach skills and techniques, not to guarantee an "A" paper.
With reasonable goals and frequent, early attendance, you will
approach each new writing assignment with competence and
confidence.
We are staffed by eighteen English M.A. and PhD Graduate
Assistants and four undergraduate writing assistants who are
well trained, knowledgeable, and unbelievably
friendly.
The UWC is housed in two rooms in Peck Hall. Tutoring takes
place in Peck Hall 325. Our Computer Lab for student use is in
Peck Hall 326. Spring and Fall hours: Monday-Thursday
8:00am-7:00pm; Friday 8:00am-3:00pm; and Saturday
10:00am-1:00pm.
Making a tutoring appointment in advance is not required but is
strongly suggested. An appointment will ensure you get help
exactly when you need it. Sessions are thirty or sixty minutes.
Simply call the Center at 904-8237 or stop by Peck Hall 325 to
see the receptionist. If you can't make a scheduled
appointment, be sure to call in advance; students who no-show
three appointments will lose tutoring privileges for the rest
of the semester. Sessions will be scheduled with the tutor who
has the fewest number of appointments first; you will seldom
have a session with the same tutor twice in a row.
