Bio
I was trained as a nuclear physicist, earning the Ph. D. degree in 1970, and have been a professor in higher education for 40 years. I have worked with nuclear scientists at Oak Ridge National Laboratory throughout my academic career and the DOE has funded my research since 1980. Since 1995 I have served as chair of the Physics & Astronomy Department, interrupted by two one-year tours as interim Vice Provost of Research and Dean of Graduate Studies.

My academic passion is to display personal excellence in all that I do and to make the process and practice of inquiry the experience of each of our undergraduate physics majors with the results of their original work being published in the best physics journals, and in many cases with them as first authors. At the president's request, I am currently directing an initiative that invokes that model of learning across the campus.

My believer's passion is to be all I was created to be and to be used by God to make him real in the minds and hearts of those in my sphere of influence. A somewhat unique aspect of my life is the deep awe and joy I experience, through the study of physics, as I see the manifold beauty, order, harmony, precision and purpose that God spoke into existence, "in the beginning." I enjoy drawing spiritual analogies and import from these and the principles by which God has ordered his creation.
