Geosciences, M.S.

The Master of Science in Geosciences requires completion of a minimum of 36 semester hours which usually translates into four semesters. The program offers two tracks: professional sciences and thesis research.

The professional sciences track combines business management with geospatial and environmental sciences.

This program is designed to prepare students for managerial positions within geosciences. The capstone experience is a professional internship.

  • The thesis research track involves the investigation of a scientific research problem. This program culminates with the thesis oral defense and approval of the thesis by committee members. This experience prepares students for specialized positions and doctoral programs.

The multi-disciplinary nature of the program offers opportunities to develop new skillsets in geospatial sciences (geographic information systems-GIS, remote sensing, spatial analysis, data), advanced data analysis (big data, scientific programming, and watershed modeling), and environmental geosystems (geology, hydrogeology, and watershed systems). These skillsets complement/enhance undergraduate experiences and professional backgrounds preparing students for placement in competitive positions in private and government agencies and in terminal degrees at PhD-granting universities.

If you live in one of these states: AL; you may be able to attend MTSU at in-state rates under the Academic Common Market program.
