Project Help is an Early Intervention Resource Agency (EIRA), affiliated with both MTSU and the Rutherford County community, that educates children with delays or disabilities from 6 to 36 months of age free of charge. Children and their families are referred to Project Help by the Tennessee Early Intervention System (TEIS), the Point of Entry (POE) into special services designated for very young children in this state.
For children to be eligible for early intervention services they must have a diagnosed disability and/or a 40% delay in one developmental area or 25% in two areas. An Individual Family Service Program (IFSP) must be developed for each child before entering Project Help.
Project Help is a stimulating, progressive preschool for families of young children who are typically developing as well. Each child at Project Help serves as a role model and peer teaching while being part of a program that promoted diversity, creativity, and cultural experiences for toddlers 15 to 36 months of age. Tuition is charges and classes are offered all day Monday through Friday and Monday through Thursday with a morning only session offered Monday through Thursday.
Family support is offered to the parents of Project Help in a variety of practical ways including: workshops, one-to-one interactions, coffee groups, and informal training seminars on specific instructional techniques.
Home-based services and infant stimulation classes are available for families who are on the waiting list for Project Help's center based program. Home visits usually occur one time per week with parents asked to be involved in each session. Infant stimulation classes are provided in brief on hour sessions to babies 6 to 15 months of age on Friday mornings. These early intervention services are written into the family's IFSP.
Project Help also trains both undergraduate and graduate students at MTSU as well as community colleges in a variety of majors including: education, nursing, social work, and other related disciplines.
