Financial Assistance

College Work-Study
You may be eligible for the college work-study program. As part of this program you could work at a number of jobs around campus. It is possible to work in the psychology department as part of this program. Contact the MTSU Financial Aid Office .
Graduate Assistantships
The psychology department has a limited number of assistantships available every year. Normally there are six GAs in the psychology department, but occasionally there may be a few more. Graduate assistants may be assigned to work for a specific class, may work with faculty on research, show a film in class, administer an exam, or be assigned other duties. Assistantships are competitive. Generally, application for fall assistantships are completed during the middle of the spring semester. Research Assistant
A number of faculty in the psychology department have money for research assistants built into their research grants. You must contact faculty members directly and ask about current or future grants. The amount of money is dependent upon the grant.
Psychology Department Scholarships & Awards
The department has a few monetary awards for outstanding students. These awards are given only once each year and are competitive. The awards and their approximate value are as follows:
- Robert E. Prytula Memorial Scholarship
The Prytula Scholarship, in the amount of $500.00 will be awarded each spring. - James O. Rust School of Psychology Endowed Scholarship
The James O. Rust Scholarship, in the amount of $500, will be awarded annually beginning in the year 2004. This award will be given to a student nearing the end of the first year of study in the school psychology graduate program.
Scholarship criteria:- Minimum graduate GPA 3.5, commitment to the field of school psychology, high level of responsibility, ethicality, professional attitude and skills, excellent performance in courses, and positive interactions with other students, faculty, and professionals in the field.
- In addition to the monetary amount, the student will be asked to help with community liaison. If the student were willing, this would consist of a minimum of 10 hours of phone contact with school psychology alumni over the course of the academic year of the award, to aid in keeping alumni apprised of events in the program and to help in soliciting contributions to the scholarship fund.
College of Graduate Studies Scholarships & Awards
There are four scholarships for graduate students available through the College of Graduate Studies. Below you will find information and guidelines for each scholarship.
- Mary W. and Chester R. Martin Graduate Academic Scholarship
Application Deadline - December 1, 2004
The Martin Scholarship, in the amount of $500 will be awarded each fall and spring semesters as a tuition grant.
Eligibility requirements are:- applicant must be a Tennessee or Kentucky resident;
- applicant must have graduated from an accredited, undergraduate institution with a minimum 3.5 cumulative grade point average (GPA);
- applicant must be a newly admitted student;
- applicant must be enrolled for nine hours of preferably graduate coursework,
- applicant must provide three letters of reference; scholarship is awarded for one semester only and is non-renewable.
- Graduate Minority Scholarship
Application Deadline - June 30, 2004
Graduate Minority Scholarships carry a cash value of approximately $8,000 per academic year and are awarded annually on a competitive basis. The awards are for up to two semesters and are non-renewable. Recipients cannot receive both a minority scholarship and a gradate assistantship, nor may they be faculty members at MTSU. Priority will be given to new graduate students.
To be eligible, applicants must:- be African-American Tennessee residents;
- be enrolled as full-time students, taking at least nine graduate hours in courses pertaining to their graduate program;
- meet admission requirements for their intended degree, and their application must be approved by the major department and the College of Graduate Studies;
- complete the Application for Tennessee Residency for Fee-Paying purposes;
- maintain a grade point average (GPA) of at 3.00 while in Graduate School.

The awards are for up to two semesters and are non-renewable. Recipients cannot receive both a minority scholarship and a graduate assistantship, nor may they be faculty members at MTSU.
- Albert L. and Ethel Carver Smith Scholarship for Graduate Students
Application Deadline - May 31, 2004
Applications for the Albert L. and Ethel Carver Smith Scholarship for Graduate Students are accepted for the fall and spring semesters. The amount of the award is $1,000 for the first semester and is renewable for one additional semester contingent on satisfactory academic progress. The scholarship committee will evaluate each application for scholarly merit and financial need.
Requirements are:- applicant must be admitted to a graduate program;
- applicant must have completed at least 12 graduate hours;
- applicant must provide a financial need statement with the application and a brief narrative supporting the application.
- Walton O. Warren Graduate Scholarships for Public School Teachers or Administrators in Tennessee
Application Deadline - April 1, 2004
Two Walton O. Warren Graduate Scholarships are awarded each academic year. The scholarship will pay all tuition and fees for 12 credit hours of graduate study above the bachelor's level.
Requirements are:- applicants must be a Tennessee resident;
- hold a bachelor's degree;
- have a minimum of four years experience in the Tennessee public schools system; plan a career in the public schools of Tennessee
