2010 Distinguished Visiting Public Historian:
Dr. Stephanie Toothman
Stephanie Toothman is the Chief of Cultural Resource Programs for the Pacific West Region of the National Park Service. Prior to her present position, Dr. Toothman served as Regional Historian, and with the National Register of Historic Places and State Plans and Grants programs. She has been Acting Superintendent of the National Mall and Memorial Parks, and is Vice President of the George Wright Society.
Dr. Toothman graduated from Smith College in the American Studies program and completed her M.A. and Ph.D. as a University Fellow in the American Civilization program at the University of Pennsylvania.
The upcoming Current Issues in Public History Practice seminar (HIST 6693/7933) will have a markedly different structure than in the past. Although details are still tentative, plans are being made to send students to Fort Vancouver National Historic Site (WA/OR) to explore CRM partnerships between the National Park Service, state park systems, and universities. At the end of the three-week "Maymester" course, Dr. Toothman will conduct a public forum in Murfreesboro. Interested students can contact Dr. Bren Martin or Dr. Rebecca Conard for more information.
