Within the Health and Human Performance Department, students can earn a M.S. degree in HPER with a Recreation concentration, or a Ph.D. in Human Performance with a specialization in Leisure Studies. The program has two options: 32 hour non-thesis and 30 hour thesis. Please contact Dr. Tara Perry at 615-904-8293 with any questions.
Requirements for consideration of admission for the M.S. include the following:
- Completion of baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution
- Overall GPA of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale for unconditional admission
- Successful applicants to the master of science programs typically have scores on the GRE Verbal and Quantitative measures which exceed 400 with a total combined score that exceeds 800 or a score on the Miller Analogies Test above 400 (38 on the old scale.) The Analytical Writing Assessment score is also considered.
- Applicants should provide three letters of recommendation from persons who can address their academic qualifications and potential for success in graduate study.
- Applicants to the M.S. in HPER are required to provide a 400 word statement of purpose giving their reason for applying to the program, their academic interest, and professional goals.
Master of Science Program
Requirements for the consideration of admission for the Ph.D. include the following:
- Successful applicants to the Ph.D. program typically have scores on the GRE Verbal and Quantitative measures which exceeds 450 with a combined score that typically exceeds 1000. The Analytical Writing Assessment score is also considered.
- Applicants should provide three letters of recommendation from persons who can address their academic qualifications and potential for success in graduate study.
- Applicants should provide a 400-500 word statement of purpose giving their reasons for applying to the Ph.D. program, area of specialization, academic interest, and professional goals.
- 3.0 GPA on last 60 credit hours of academic work (masters + bachelors)
- research skills; 6 credit hours of statistics/research methods equivalent to HHP 6700 and 6610 (Students without these skills will be expected to complete HHP 6700 and 6610)
- Masters degree (bachelor or masters degree must be in a related area)

Job Opportunities in Recreation and Leisure Studies
The M.S. degree prepares students as professionals for potential supervisory and administrative positions in diverse recreation and leisure service agencies. Additionally, master’s students are prepared to pursue doctoral degrees in Recreation and Leisure Studies.
The Ph.D. program combines pedagogy with scholarly achievement and research excellence to prepare the student for all facets of potential careers as university faculty, agency researchers, consultants, or professionals.
Financial Aid
A limited number of graduate teaching assistantships, research assistantships, scholarships, and doctoral fellowships are available in addition to other forms of aid. Graduate assistantships provide a competitive stipend in addition to waivers of tuition and out-of-state fees. Opportunities for 12-month appointments exist. Applications may be obtained from the College of Graduate Studies or from the HHP Department. Students must meet the requirements for unconditional admission to graduate school and have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
