Printer and Copier Security

Printers and copiers are able to store sensitive information and/or PII on hard drives located in the devices. This information, if not encrypted, can be accessed if not removed from the printer before disposal. Since there is no standard printer vendor for campus, creating a unified procedure for ensuring unencrypted sensitive data does not leave with the printer is not possible. However, there are several resources available to mitigate this risk. Some suggest removing and destroying the hard drive, while others point to wiping procedures. Note, a simple disk format is not good enough! Formatting does not erase the data.
