AIDS QUILT

The AIDS Memorial Quilt is a poignant memorial, a powerful tool for use in preventing new HIV infections, and it's the largest ongoing community arts project in the world. Each of the more than 44,000 colorful panels that make up the Quilt memorializes the life of a person lost to AIDS.

As the epidemic continues claiming lives around the world and here in the United States, the Quilt continues to grow and to reach more communities with its messages of remembrance, awareness and hope.

The Goals of The AIDS Memorial Quilt are to:

  • Provide a creative means for remembrance and healing.
  • Effectively illustrate the enormity of the AIDS epidemic.
  • Increase the general public's awareness of HIV and AIDS.
  • Assist others with HIV infection-prevention education.
  • Raise funds for community-based AIDS service organizations.

SGA adopted the AIDS Quilt as its official philanthropy project in the fall of 2003 and each year a portion of the Quilt is shipped to campus for display. While the Quilt is at MTSU, a variety of events take place such as AIDS Awareness Week, panel discussions, a benefit party, candlelight vigil, and Basket Auction. These functions are designed not only to promote the Quilt's arrival on campus, but to raise funds for such organizations as Nashville Cares.

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY BLITZ BUILD

MTSU Habitat Blitz Build

Beginning in January 2006, students started raising funds through various programs for the first MTSU Habitat Blitz Build. The goal is to raise $50K so that students may begin building a home for a resident of Rutherford County. Because of this project, MTSU has started two strong events on campus: Cheer for Humanity and See Spot Run 5K Run/Walk. Students, alumni, and staff will be able to join efforts to build a house from the ground up in one week on campus once fundraising is complete. Currently, nearly $30K has been raised.

Blitz the 'Boro

In order to unite MTSU and the Murfreesboro community in the fundraising process, students have organized a unique fundraising event called Blitz the 'Boro. Teams of 10 go out into the Murfreesboro community on an all-day "blitz" to see who can get the most donations for the build. The winning team receives an SGA sponsored homecoming tailgating party.

Cheer for Humanity

An annual cheer and dance competition, Cheer for Humanity is on of the most successful Habitat Blitz Build programs. Cheerleading and Dance Teams from across tech state come each year to participate in this growing competition.

See Spot Run

Annual 5K Walk/Run for participants and their dogs. Awards are given to top finishers in their age group and top dogs.
