Centennial Snippets - Disabled Student Services

• This office was previously known as Handicapped Services.
• It became a full service department in 1985, serving 109 students.
  • As of 2011 this department serves 789 students.
• John Harris was the first director and still serves as director today.
• Bart Dodson is a famous DSS alumni.
  • He won 8 gold medals in 8 events in the '92 Paralympics Games in Barcelona, Spain.
  • He broke world records that still stand today.
  • Bart was inducted into the Wheelchair Sports USA Hall of Fame in 2001.
• The Adaptive Technologies Center opened in 1999 in the James Walker Library.
  • Amy Burks serves as the Coordinator of this center.
• In 2011 an adaptive recreation room opened in the Campus Recreation Center.
  • It provides fitness programs for disabled students.
