Student Affairs - A Closer Look Survey
During the Spring of 2004, the Division of Student Affairs conducted a comprehensive review of the programs and services provided by the division. The last time a review such as this occurred was in 1995. Similar to it’s previous administration, the Closer Look Survey sought to collect information that would assist in improving the quality of services and programs within the division. Additionally, the survey examined student awareness of and student satisfaction levels with many of the programs and services offered within the Division of Student Affairs. The results of the survey are also being utilized to meet the goals of the institutional effectiveness plans submitted by the division units as part of the reaccreditation process.

Residency Choice and Student Expectations Survey
The Residency Choice and Student Expectations survey is administered annually during new student orientation. Each student attending the summer orientation program completes the survey prior to registering for classes. Data from the survey is disseminated throughout the summer to various departments as part of an on-going effort to improve the student’s orientation and academic advising experience.

Data relevant to the following areas is collected:

  1. Student Expectations – this section of the instrument determines the students’ expectations of MTSU, its programs and services. Students are asked if they plan to attend athletic and cultural events, participate in student organizations or Greek organizations, or have access to personal computers, etc.
  2. Choice of Residency – The original purpose of the Residency Choice and Student Expectations survey was to examine why students choose to live where they live and whether the amount and type of financial aid they receive impacts that decision. This section of the survey has been eliminated with the start of the 2004 survey.
  3. CUSTOMS and Academic Advising Evaluation – This section of the survey asks students to rate their experience with the orientation program and their experience with their academic advising session.
  4. Demographics and Student Characteristics – a variety of demographic information is collected about the students, including, gender, age, classification, etc. Additionally, data concerning students’ college choice, workload, class loads and study habits is collected.
