Code of Computer Use

Books & Gavel Primary to the mission of Middle Tennessee State University is the continued striving for excellence in instruction, research, and public service. Access to emerging information technology is essential to obtaining these goals. MTSU has developed clear and concise policies to ensure that use of computing hardware and software on campus, as well as the use of the campus data network, is treated appropriately.

It is imperative that MTSU students understand what a "user" is related to computer technology. A "user" is any individual who uses, logs in, attempts to use, or attempts to log into a system (whether by direct connection or across one or more networks) or who attempts to connect to or traverse a network, whether via hardware, software, or both.

It is important for all Middle Tennessee State University computer users to practice respectful behavior in their computing activities since they have access to many valuable and sensitive resources, and their computing practices can adversely affect the work of other users. Most users act responsibly, but the few who do not, either through ignorance or intent, have the potential for disrupting all users' work. MTSU's policies are intended to prevent abuses of equipment and services and to ensure that its use honors the public trust and supports the University's mission to educate students, conduct research, and provide public service.

In cases of violation of #33, Abuse of Computer Resources and Facilities of the Student Rights and Responsibilities handbook the following actions are prescribed:

  1. Immediate suspension of the user's account, followed by a timely review of the charges by the appropriate person or persons.
  2. Referral to police agencies in the case of suspected law violations.
  3. The user's computing privileges at MTSU may be permanently and totally removed. There will be no refund of any technology access fees.
  4. Depending on the severity of the case, students may be recommended for suspension or expulsion from MTSU.

Students are encouraged to refer to the Student Code of Conduct handbook and the Information Technology Resources policy.
