This year's conference theme is Innovative Approaches to Adult and Traditional Learner Retention. We invite proposals highlighting innovative and effective programs that schools have implemented to attract, engage, and retain their adult and traditional learners. Adult and traditional learners present a range of unique and challenging issues when it comes to completing a college education. How has your institution adapted to the needs and characteristics of its learners? What have you done that you've found to be particularly effective at helping your adult or traditional learners to move toward their degree completion?

Deadline for proposal submissions is Friday, November 15th, 2013.

Guidelines for proposal submission

All proposals must be submitted through the online proposal form. Each proposal should include the following information:

  • Contact information for main presenter and all co-presenters
  • Presenter Institution Type: Technology Center/2-Year/4-Year
  • Presentation title (no more than 10 words)
  • Preferred presentation type: Paper/poster presentation/No preference
  • Presentation track: Adult Learners/Traditional Learners/Both
  • Presentation abstract (no more than 100 words; suitable for inclusion in the Conference Program)
  • Presentation description (no more than 500 words). Please provide an overview of your institution's adult learner retention programming, including goals, implementation, and assessment (if applicable).
  • Designation of one or two preferred topic emphases or areas.
    Topics include:

    • Emphasis I: Learner Characteristics
      • Specific Adult or Traditional Learner Populations (e.g., first-generation, under-represented, single parent, veteran, LGBTQ students)
      • Supporting the Whole Student
      • Prior Learning Assessments (PLAs)
    • Emphasis II: Coaching/Mentoring/Technology Applications
      • Technology Applications for Adult or Traditional Learners
      • Coaching/Mentoring Programs for Adult or Traditional Learners
      • Other/General Adult or Traditional Learner Retention programs

    • Emphasis III: Student Advising

      • Career Services and Development/Working toward Success
      • Internships and Service Activities for Adult or Traditional Learners
      • Financial Aid Issues and Support
      • Academic Advising
  • Designation of specific audience for presentation: Faculty/Staff/Students/Open
  • Audiovisual needs: Please indicate required AV equipment—LCD projector, external audio speakers, internet connection, flipchart with markers. Wireless internet access will be available throughout the conference space. Presenters must bring their own laptops.
