Undergraduate Programs


Major Programs of Study


All students at MTSU must complete the required
General Education Program.


Students who choose the Theatre concentration must take courses

that provide training in all areas of the art form.


Required courses for all students with a Theatre concentration include:

Theatre Appreciation

Stagecraft

Fundamentals of Acting

Make-up Techniques for Performers

Introduction to Costume for Arts and Entertainment

Fundamentals of Play Directing

Theatre History I: Greek Period to Restoration

Theatre History II:  Restoration to Present

Senior Seminar

Production Practicum III and IV (2 completions each)


Guided electives are chosen from:

Introduction to Lighting for Arts and Entertainment

Child Drama

Introduction to Arts Management

Stage Management

Playwriting


Bachelor of Arts in Speech and Theatre, with concentration in Theatre

B.A. students must complete the General Education Program, Required courses, Guided electives, and a Minor (may be replaced with a Cognate).  The student must also demonstrate proficiency in a foreign language equivalent to two years of college-level coursework. To meet the requirement, the student must successfully complete 2010 and 2020 or any courses numbered above the 2000 level in a single foreign language.


Bachelor of Science in Speech and Theatre, with concentration in Theatre

B.S. students must complete the General Education Program, Required courses, Guided electives, and two Minors (one of which may be replaced with a Cognate, but one Minor must be from outside of the Department of Speech and Theatre).


Bachelor of Science in Theatre with Teacher Licensure

Students seeking to be licensed to teach in grades K-12 must complete the General Education Program, Required courses and Guided electives for the concentration, and one Minor (which may be replaced with a Cognate).  A second Minor in Secondary Education is also required, including a professional semester that incorporates Directed Teaching.


Cognates for Theatre Majors

Cognates enable students to focus their studies within a particular area of interest in the field of theatre.  Details on specific cognate requirements may be found in the MTSU Undergraduate Catalog or by viewing the downloadable Upper Division forms for the Theatre concentration (links at right).  Cognates may be chosen from:  Child Drama, Dance, Directing, and Performance.


Undergraduate Minors


Minor in Speech and Theatre

The minor in Speech and Theatre consists of 18 semester hours and includes COMM 2200. A student may concentrate coursework for the minor in the Communication Studies or Theatre concentration with the specific course requirements based primarily upon the individual student’s academic interests and needs. Those students who wish to minor in Speech and Theatre should consult the department chair.


Entertainment Arts Design Minor

This minor is designed for students who plan a career in theatrical or entertainment design. The minor consists of 15 hours of courses selected from the approved list (see MTSU Undergraduate Catalog) after consulting with the minor advisor. Courses taken to meet major field of study requirements or other minor requirements may not be counted toward this minor.
