The Writer's Loft FAQ

Who may apply?Anyone with a passion to write and a commitment to improve her or his craft.

How long will it take me to earn this certificate? MTSU grants Certificates in Creative Writing after the successful completion of three trimesters. These may be taken sequentially or at a slower pace.

Will I earn college credit while in The Writer's Loft? The Writer's Loft is a non-degree project of Middle Tennessee State University and hence does not offer any college credit.

May I transfer courses from another university and receive credit for any portion of The Writer's Loft? The Writer's Loft program focuses on work completed while in the program. Course credit and work produced elsewhere are not transferable.

If I am already working on a writing project, a novel or nonfiction work for example, can I bring that to The Writer's Loft? Absolutely. In fact, we encourage you to do so. Because we are a certificate program we are free to focus on your needs rather than have you conform to our requirements. Students often enter the program with either an idea in mind or a rough manuscript in hand, and we are only too happy to help you produce a complete manuscript. Many of our students continue to enroll in The Writers Loft in order to enlist the help of faculty in project after project.

Do I retain the rights to any material created while in The Writer's Loft? Yes. Everything you write belongs to you.
