2012 Summer Bridge Overview

The TLSAMP Summer Bridge program is hosted annually on a rotating basis between Alliance member campuses.  The 2012 Summer Bridge Program will be hosted June 3rd – June 25th  at the University of Memphis campus.  50 students from across the state of Tennessee are selected to participate. The Summer Bridge Program seeks to provide a unique, pre-collegiate educational experience for each student.  In addition to classroom instruction, students will have the opportunity to hear outstanding speakers, participate in academic research and attend off-site field trips.

The Summer Bridge Program seeks to emphasize three areas: academic instruction, academic skills and life skills. Academic instruction covers math, language arts,  science, physics, and computer science. Academic skills include supervised study sessions, communication skills and academic study skills. Life skills include teaming through group activities under the supervision of program staff.

Below are requirements for the 2012 Summer Bridge Program:

In addition to being an underrepresented minority student (Hispanic, African-American, American-Indian, Alaskan Native or Pacific Islander), participating students must:

  1. Receive a written invitation from one of the six Alliance institutions in the state of Tennessee. (Lemoyne-Owen College, Middle Tennessee State University, Tennessee State University, The University of Memphis, The University of Tennessee at Knoxville, and Vanderbilt University)

  2. Be admitted to and plan on attending one of the six Alliance institutions in the Fall of 2012.

  3. Submit the required essay.

  4. Complete and return all enclosed forms and the essay as listed in the application procedure by the specified deadline.

The 2012 Summer Bridge Program of the Tennessee Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (TLSAMP) is a collaborative effort presented by the Alliance partners consisting of six universities in the state of Tennessee, and underwritten by the National Science Foundation. The goal of TLSAMP is to increase the number of under-represented graduates in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM).  The six Alliance partners include: Lemoyne-Owen College, Middle Tennessee State University, Tennessee State University, The University of Memphis, The University of Tennessee at Knoxville, and Vanderbilt University.
