Degree Requirements

Overall 120 semester hours are required. Included are a minimum of 60 hours from a four-year institution, including 42 upper-division (3/4000-level) courses, of which 30 hours must be taken at MTSU.

The last 18 hours must be completed through MTSU. With approval from the dean, six of these hours may be completed by extension or at another accredited college or university. There are limits on the number of hours accepted for credit-by-examination, credit for service-related experience, and prior learning assessment. Students should consult with a University advisor.

General Education Requirements

Communication (9 hours)
ENGL 1010, 1020, and COMM 2200

History (6 hours)
Choose two of the following.
HIST 2010, 2020, or 2030

Humanities and/or Fine Arts (9 hours)
Choose one of the following.
ENGL 2020, 2030 or HUM 2610

Choose two with different prefixes.

Mathematics (3 hours)

Choose two with different prefixes. (Each lecture class also requires a 1-hour lab.)

Social/Behavioral Sciences (6 hours)

Major Requirements

• A 31-hour major consisting of seven hours of required courses and one area of emphasis of 24 hours determined in consultation with an advisor;
  • completion of at least nine semester hours at the upper division level through MTSU in the major;
  • 2.00 GPA in the courses taken in the major;
• 18-hour area of support or minor; and
• 30 hours of electives (or 33 hours if a 15-hour minor is used).

Other degree requirements

• A minimum of 25 percent of credit for each degree awarded by MTSU must be earned through offerings by the university.
• At least 42 hours of junior and senior (3000–4000 level) courses must be completed with a grade of C (2.00 GPA) or better.
• Courses numbered 1000 and 2000 which are substituted for 3000-4000-level courses may not be used in the 42 upper division hours.
• A minimum of 30 semester hours of junior and senior (3000-4000-level) courses must be completed through MTSU.
• A minimum of 60 semester hours of senior college credit will be required from all students who transfer from colleges with less than four-year designation.
• No more than 25 percent of the credits for nonbusiness degrees may be in courses commonly found in the school of business.
• A minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.00 must be obtained on all degree credit courses.
