Currently, two courses are offered at MTSU. Both courses are graduate level courses.
SPED 6700: Introduction to Autism Spectrum Disorders
The purpose of this course is to provide students with knowledge and skills needed to promote learning and success for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder. This course includes a discussion of the definition, etiology, and characteristics of ASD Students will be introduced to current research and issues emphasizing a collaborative problem solving approach that facilitates effective family-professional partnerships and educational programming for this population. Students will develop skills needed for planning and delivering the services necessary to productivity and inclusion of individuals with ASD in school and community life. This course is worth 3.0 credits hours.
SPED 6730: Methods of Instruction for Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders
The purpose of this course is to provide students with knowledge and skills needed to promote successful learning for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder. This course includes a discussion of the definition, etiology, and characteristics of ASD with a specific focus on methods of instruction as they apply to students with Autism Spectrum Disorders. Given that students with ASD may think and perceive information differently, this course will focus on brain organization and function for students with ASD. In addressing the brain-behavior connection, students will be better able to plan the most appropriate instructional strategies for students with ASD. Students will be introduced to current research and issues emphasizing a collaborative problem solving approach that facilitates effective family-professional partnerships and educational programming for this population. Students will develop skills needed for instructional planning and delivering the services necessary to productivity and inclusion of individuals with ASD in school and community life. This course is worth 3.0 credits hours.
