John W. Cothern serves as MTSU's Senior Vice President. Previously he served as Vice President for Business and Finance from 2003 until June 2005. He served as Interim Vice President for Business and Finance for several months before his permanent appointment to the position in 2003.
Prior to his arrival at MTSU, Cothern was Assistant Vice President for Business and Finance at the University of Memphis (UoM).
Cothern, a Memphis native, is a 1970 graduate of UoM (then Memphis State University) with a Bachelor of Science degree in biology and has a Juris Doctor degree (1973) from UoM's Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law. Cothern is a licensed attorney and was with the UoM Division of Business and Finance for 29 years prior to joining the administration at MTSU in 2003.
Cothern previously worked with President McPhee when McPhee was UoM's Senior Vice Provost. Cothern also worked with Gene Smith, who served as MTSU's Interim President before McPhee's arrival in 2001. Smith was UoM's Vice President for Business and Finance prior to assuming MTSU's interim presidency for a year in fall 2000.
John and his wife Debbie have lived in the Nashville area since 1998. They have two grown children, John and Joanie, and one grandson, Aiden.
