Exercise
Science & Health Promotion
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
The masters degree in Exercise Science and Health Promotion offers both
thesis and non-thesis options. The degree prepares candidates to gain
certification through the American College of Sports Medicine and to enter
a terminal degree program in Exercise Science. Candidates are prepared
for career opportunities in clinical exercise physiology, and corporate,
community, and private fitness sectors.
EMPLOYMENT OBJECTIVE:
Fitness directors, fitness trainers, sports instructors and coaches; preparation
for certification or terminal degree in Exercise Science or Sports Medicine.
DESCRIPTION OF HEALTH CAREER:
Fitness directors oversee the operations of a health club
or fitness center. Their work involves creating and maintaining programs
that meet the needs of the club's members.
Fitness workers instruct or coach groups or individuals
in various exercise activities. Because gyms and health clubs offer a
variety of exercise activities such as weightlifting, yoga, aerobics,
and karate, fitness workers typically specialize in only a few areas.
Fitness trainers help clients assess their level of physical
fitness and help them set and reach fitness goals. They also demonstrate
various exercise activities and help clients improve their techniques.
They may keep records of their clients' exercise sessions to analyze their
progress towards physical fitness.
Sports instructors teach professional and nonprofessional
athletes; they organize, instruct, train, and lead athletes of indoor
and outdoor sports. Using their knowledge of their sport, physiology,
and corrective techniques, they determine the type and level of difficulty
of exercises, prescribe specific drills, and correct individuals'
techniques.
LENGTH OF PROGRAM: The
non-thesis option requires completion of 39 semester hours including a
6-credit internship. The thesis option includes 33 hours of coursework.
Prerequisites to both options include one year of human anatomy and physiology
and certification in CPR.
DEPARTMENT: Health and
Human Performance
