3. COURSE DESCRIPTION:

ET 4815 Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) Systems 3 cr. hrs Pre-requisite: ET 3810 - Thermodynamics and Heat Transfer Course Description: The Heating, Ventilating, Air Conditioning (HVAC) Systems course deals with the design and operation of heat and mass transfer systems which produce the needed environments for manufacturing operations, industrial processes and human comfort. Systems which utilize mechanical equipment such as pumps, blowers, fans, compressors and heat exchanges which are found in fields as diverse as air conditioning, low temperature metallurgy, food preservation, chemical processing and industrial manufacturing will be covered. Lecture/Lab

4. COURSE OBJECTIVES:

a. The students will understand the application of basic thermodynamics, fluid mechanics and heat transfer in sizing HVAC systems and estimating their operating costs.

b. The students will perform HVAC load and energy calculation procedures that are consistent with current accepted industry standards.

c. The students will be familiar with many of the system types and the various aspects of engineering design of HVAC systems used for acceptable environmental conditions in buildings.

d. The students will be capable of presenting to their peers the results of an independent study in a particular area of HVAC systems.

5. EVALUATION AND GRADING:

Your course grade will be calculated as follow:

Four Tests - 100 points each

60 %
( lowest test score will be dropped)

Homework/Lab assignments

20 %

Final Exam - Not comprehensive

20 %
100 %

Grades will be assigned based on the +/- grades as follows;
  90 and above A
  80-82 B- 83-86 B 87-89 B+
  70-72 C- 73-76 C 77-79 C+
  60-62 D- 63-66 D 67-69 D+
  59 and below F
Your course grade will be determined based on the percentages described above. No "CURVE" of any kind will be used, and once your final grade is determined for the course, No FURTHER CHANGES WILL BE MADE !
A scientific calculator is required for this course

6. POLICY ON MAKE-UP WORK:

In general, no makeup exam or assignment will be given, unless the instructor is notified in advance of an absence. In case of emergencies, the instructor will decide whether to allow the student to make up the missed activity

7. ATTENDANCE:

Attendance in all class lectures is strongly recommended. For specific university policies concerning class attendance, refer to the current MTSU student handbook.

8. REASONABLE ACCOMMODATION FOR STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES

If you have a disability that may require assistance or accommodation, or you have questions related to any accommodations for testing, note takers, readers, etc., please speak with me as soon as possible. Students may also contact the Office of Disabled Students Services (898-2783) with questions about such services.

9. LOTTERY SCHOLARSHIPINFORMATION:

LOTTERY SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION: To retain Tennessee Education Lottery Scholarship eligibility, you must earn a cumulative TELS GPA of 2.75 after 24 attempted hours and a cumulative TELS GPA of 3.0 thereafter. A grade of C, D, F, or I in this class may negatively impact TELS eligibility. Dropping a class after 14 days may also impact eligibility. If you withdraw from this class and it results in an enrollment status of less than full time, you may lose eligibility for your lottery scholarship. For additional lottery scholarship rules please refer to your Lottery Statement of Understanding form, review lottery scholarship requirements on the web at http://scholarships.web.mtsu.edu/telsprogram.htm, or contact the MTSU financial aid office at 898-2830. .

10. COMPUTER USAGE:

1. Students will utilize personal computers to analyze power cycles

2. HVAC software will used for load analysis

3. Computer generated graphical representation of computer-assisted problems is required.
