The International Boethius Society is a non-profit organization promoting scholarship on all aspects of the work, influence, and age of Boethius. The purpose of the society is to promote interest in Boethius and to advance Boethius studies; to make accessible to all members, by means of publications approved by the Society, information of common interest, especially concerning the teaching of and research in Boethius; to hold annual international meetings and other gatherings for the purpose of exchanging ideas and techniques pertitnent to the proper study of Boethius and his times; to promote and publish research and texts in Boethius and related fields; to promote the teaching of Boethius and related areas at all appropriate levels of education; and to operate and maintain the Society exclusively for educational purposes.

BOETHIUS CONFERENCE: CALL FOR ABSTRACTS

The Franciscan University of Steubenville Graduate Philosophy Program will sponsor the Second Annual Conference on Christian Philosophy on April 13-14, 2007. This year's topic is Boethius, and the keynote speakers will include John McGee (Toronto) and Peter King (Toronto).

FORTHCOMING SPECIAL ISSUE OF CARMINA PHILOSOPHIAE

The International Boethius Society and the Conference on Boethius at the Franciscan University of Steubenville have entered into an agreement to publish selected papers from the conference in a Special Issue of Carmina Philosophiae, which will be the 2007 issue. The volume will be edited by Noel Harold Kaylor, Jr. and Philip Edward Phillips, with Mark Roberts serving as a special guest editor. The International Boethius Society will sponsor one session, “Boethius in the Middle Ages,” at the 42 nd International Congress on Medieval Studies (May 10-13, 2007) in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

Organized by Philip Edward Phillips (Middle Tennessee State University), the session will feature three presentations:

“Letters for Consolation: Prefatory Epistles in the Manuscripts of William of Wheteley's Commentary on Boethius,” Graham N. Drake (SUNY Geneseo)

“Boethian Philosophy and Chaucer's The Knight's Tale,” Alison Klawiter (University of Minnesota, Duluth)

“‘Starry, Starry Night': The Stars as Seen by Boethius, Chaucer, and Dante,” Noel Harold Kaylor, Jr. (Troy University ) and Zachary Couch (Troy University )

The date and location of the session will be announced on the International Medieval Congress web site (http://www.wmich.edu/medieval/congress/).

The International Boethius Society will not sponsor a session at the 2006 MLA Convention in Philadelphia . Please see future issues of the MLA Newsletter for the Call for Papers from the Society for the 2007 MLA Convention.

Announcements:

The International Boethius Society is pleased to welcome Professor Christopher Baswell as a Trustee.

Carmina Philosophiae 14 (2005), dedicated to the late Otto Gundler and featuring articles in French and English, is out and has been sent to all current subscribers. If you have paid your dues and not received your journal, please contact Noel Harold Kaylor, Jr. (nkaylor@troy.edu). Carmina Philosophiae 15 (2006) is currently under production. Carmina Philosophiae 16 (2007) will be a Special Issue featuring the selected proceedings from the Second Annual Conference on Christian Philosophy--Boethius--at the Franciscan University of Steubenville. The editors are accepting articles for Volume 17 (2008). If you have something that you would like to submit, please contact Philip Edward Phillips (pphillip@mtsu.edu).

The International Boethius Society is saddened by the loss of Michael Masi, Loyola University, Chicago, who was one of the society's longest and most devoted supporters. Michael Masi served first as President and later as Trustee of the International Boethius Society until his death in 2004. The editors have decided to dedicate Carmina Philosophiae XIII (2004) to Professor Masi's memory.

Calls for Papers:

The International Boethius Society will sponsor a session on "Chaucer and Boethius" at the 2007 Modern Language Association Convention in Chicago. Please send abstracts for 20-minute papers on any aspect of Chaucer and Boethius to Philip Edward Phillips (pphillip@mtsu.edu) no later than 15 March.
