The Age of Spiritual Machines by Ray Kurzweil
The Age of Spiritual Machines is an awesome book that adress what's going on and what is to come with computers and especially aritficial intelligence. It's a creepy, yet realistic and thought provoking look at computers in relation to real life. I really can't give this book it's full credit. People told me to read it and I put it off and put it off and then when I finally got to it I was like "Whoa. This is what they are talking about." Even if you're not into computers this book is fascinating.

Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies by Jared Diamond
Describes 13,000 years of human history and human enterprise (e.g., empires, religions, writing, agriculture, guns, etc.). Diamond pays special attention to why such advances arose at different rates on different continents and how this differential progress led to slavery and racism.

The Selfish Gene by Richard Dawkins
Dawkins argues that evolution operates at the genetic level -- that is, natural selection ultimately works to favor (or disfavor) genes rather than the people in which they reside. His work explains why people engage in seemingly non-evolutionarily adaptive behavioral (e.g., altruism and self-sacrifice) from an evolutionary perspective.

"Bloom County" by Berke Breathed
When i thought about what literature I found significant in my life, only one set of work actually seem acceptable Berke Breathed's "Bloom County" comic series. The strip single handedly, politically socialized me. A link to Breathed's website is: (http://www.berkeleybreathed.com/). Breathed is a genius by any standards, and his commentray is excellent. Moreover, he raised the bar for artist talent in comic strips.
