INTRODUCTION
TO GREEKS
As
you get ready to enter college, you may have several questions
about your future. Will I make friends? Will I fit in? Will I
make it academically? How can I get involved? Becoming a member
of a fraternity or sorority at Middle Tennessee State University
may be the best choice for you. Fraternities and sororities have
been an important part of MTSU since the founding of the first
nationally affiliated fraternity in 1967. They have also been
a big part of the personal and professional development of the
men and women who join them.
Current
fraternity and sorority members tell us that they joined fraternities
and sororities primarily for one reason: friendships. In addition,
membership offers leadership opportunities, community involvement,
scholastic achievement and a lifetime of association and fun.
The people you spend time with while in college will become some
of your closest friends, and sororities strengthen those relationships
through the common experiences you share with one another.
Fraternity and sorority recruitment at MTSU is a formal recruitment
process. What does this mean?
Sororities
As you register for sorority recruitment, you will receive a Rho
Sigma—a Recruitment Counselor. This woman is a current member
of a sorority on campus who has chosen to help you with the recruitment
process. Her purpose is to make the process as simple as possible
for you and to help you in making your decision on which sorority
you wish to join. Sorority recruitment is a mutual selection process,
meaning that you select the sororities you return to as much as
they select who they invite back. Your Rho Sigma is the person
with whom you will have continued contact during the summer and
is the one who will be with you every step of the way during the
formal recruitment week.
Fraternities
As you register for fraternity recruitment, the fraternities will
receive your general information and begin contacting you to invite
you to summer events and to meet the brothers during formal recruitment
in the fall. The formal recruitment process itself occurs in late
August and involves visiting each of the fraternities and learning
about them, meeting the members, and making a mutual decision
about which group you can be the best member.
At
recruitment events you will meet many people and discover some
of the things that make each sorority different. Choosing a fraternity
or sorority can be difficult, but remember that it is your decision—not
someone else’s—and that you should choose the group
you think is right for you.
About
half of your learning in college comes from the classroom; the
other half will be determined by how you spend your time outside
of class. Take advantage of every opportunity you can. The old
saying is that you will get out of college what you put into it,
and sorority membership can give you experiences and friendships
that cannot be found in any other college experience.
Many
incoming students will join a fraternity or sorority this year,
and these men and women will be active in the classroom and on
campus. It is important to show that you can communicate effectively
with others and that you have a wide range of experiences and
interests. Membership in a fraternity or sorority can help in
both cases. Please contact the Office of Greek Affairsif you need further information.
