Before the settlement of Lytle Creek was named Murfreesboro, before the town became Tennessee's state capital in 1818, and long before the Battle of Stones River began in 1863, a school was built. In 1806 the Tennessee General Assembly provided for academies in every county of the new state and appointed trustees. In Rutherford County, the school was named Bradley Academy.
