History
When
the Women's Center at MTSU opened its doors in 1977, it became
the oldest university women's center in the state of Tennessee,
a year older than Vanderbilt University. The founders of the center,
including June S. Anderson, saw the need
to provide support for the increasing number of women entering
higher education.
Originally
called WISE, Women in Service to Education, was staffed by faculty
and staff volunteers in a small room in Jones Hall. Women faculty
provided furniture, made curtains, donated books and encouraged
adult learners in non-traditional fields.
While women
at MTSU have come a long way from the single room and the homemade
furnishings, a "room of their own" is still at the heart
of the present Women's Center.
Named
for a chemistry professor and one of the founding mothers of women's
programs at MTSU, the June Anderson Women's Center, located off
the lobby in the James Union Building, has two full-time staff
members, and several student associates.
Our
goals are to offer a safe haven for the women of MTSU, to provide
advocacy for women on campus and to enable them to feel supported
as they embark on their journey in higher education.
