Kevin E. Smith

Kevin Smith completed his M.A. (1990) and Ph.D. (1992) in Anthropology at Vanderbilt University in Nashville. His main area of research is in the archaeology of the southeastern United States, with special interests in the late prehistoric chiefdoms of Middle Tennessee (ca. A.D. 900-1500) and the early frontier period of Tennessee (ca. A.D. 1780-1820).

Major on-going current research includes:

• Current field project (2005-2010) -- The Castalian Springs Mound Archaeological Project.
• Analysis of artifacts from the Sam Davis Home Slave Quarter Project
• Analysis of artifacts from the Old First Presbyterian Church site (40RD271), Murfreesboro, Rutherford County, Tennessee (see also the On-Line Exhibit Catalog)
• Analysis of artifacts from slave residences at Wynnewood State Historic Area, Sumner County, Tennessee
• analysis and writeup of the Pinson Mounds Archaeological Field School
• analysis of artifacts from several late prehistoric Native American sites in the Nashville region
• Research on the Peabody Museum expeditions to Middle Tennessee. during the late 1800s
• Bledsoe's Station (an early frontier settlement in Middle Tennessee), and
• an archaeological survey of Cordell Hull Reservoir.

Smith began teaching classes as an adjunct at MTSU in 1988 and has been a full-time faculty member since 1994.

He currently serves as:
